DRIVING LICENCE RENEWAL
A Greek driving licence has to be renewed before its expiry date. The application is submitted digitally and can start at the earliest two months before the licence expires. We handle the paperwork and follow the application until the new licence is issued.

Who it applies to
Renewal applies to the categories on your licence that are due to be renewed. If you hold professional categories or a CPC, their own validity dates and conditions are checked separately.
Timing
2 months before
The procedure can start at the earliest two months before the licence expires. That window leaves time for the medical examinations, myPhoto and any corrections.
The official administrative estimate is around 45 days, but the real time depends on the competent Transport Directorate.
When you collect the new licence, the previous document may have to be handed in.
The application can also be submitted after the expiry date, but submitting it does not by itself give you the right to drive with an expired category.
When the licence has expired, or expires before the new one is printed, the competent Transport Directorate may issue a temporary driving licence. It is not granted automatically — each case is examined separately.
Age cases
From the age of 65 the validity of the renewed licence changes, and from the age of 80 additional medical specialties are compulsory. The two cases are not the same.
Examination by a pathologist (or a permitted related specialty) and by an ophthalmologist. The validity of the renewed licence cannot exceed three years, and can be shorter if a medical time limit is set.
In this age case an ENT specialist and a neurologist or psychiatrist are not compulsory on age grounds alone. If a medical indication arises, an additional examination may be requested.
Four medical specialties are compulsory: pathologist (or a permitted related specialty), ophthalmologist, ENT specialist and neurologist or psychiatrist. The validity of the renewed licence cannot exceed two years.
The four specialties are compulsory even if only two were needed at the previous renewal. If the medical history or the findings make it necessary, another specialty may also be requested.
Medical PIN & myPhoto
When the procedure starts, a four-digit Medical PIN is issued. You give the PIN, your Greek tax number (AFM) and your social security number (AMKA) to the doctors, and they register the health certificates electronically.
The health certificates are accepted if they are submitted within six months of being issued. If a medical indication arises, an additional examination may be requested.
From the age of 80 four specialties are required — see the age cases above. We can suggest doctors for the procedure; you are of course free to choose any private doctor of a permitted specialty with a lawful practice in Greece.
A recent digital photograph and a digital image of your signature are required for the new licence. A photographer uploads them to myPhoto, and they are then linked to the licence procedure.

What we do
The application is submitted electronically through the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport digital platform, but it passes through several stages before it is completed.
