Driving Licence Replacement in Athens

If your Greek driving licence has been lost, stolen, damaged or has become illegible, a new document of the same licence is issued — no theory or driving test is involved. Replacing an old paper licence with the current card format is a separate procedure, with its own government fee.

Lost driving licence

Your driving licence has been lost. A duplicate of the licence document is issued through a digital application, with no examinations.

Conditions

  • You declare that the licence has been lost, that it is not being held by any authority and that you do not hold another Greek licence or a licence from an EU/EEA country.
  • If the licence itself has expired, the renewal procedure is followed instead of a duplicate.

Stolen driving licence

Your driving licence has been stolen. The procedure and the government fee are the same as for a lost licence.

Conditions

  • You declare that the licence has been stolen, that it is not being held by any authority and that you do not hold another Greek licence or a licence from an EU/EEA country.
  • The basic procedure does not require a police certificate as a general supporting document — the solemn declaration is what is required.

Damaged or illegible driving licence

The licence is considered damaged or altered when the details or the photograph on the document can no longer be read properly. A new document of the same licence is issued, with no examinations.

Conditions

  • The duplicate for damage or alteration is issued provided the driving licence is still valid.
  • The damaged document is handed in when you collect the new one.

e-Paravolo 3696 — Duplicate driving licence due to damage or alteration

Old paper licence replaced with the card format

You still hold the old pink or paper licence and want the current card-format licence. This is a different procedure from a duplicate: the old document is replaced, digitally and without examinations.

Conditions

  • Old-format documents are replaced with a card-format licence by 19 January 2033 at the latest, and can be replaced at any time before that.
  • That date is not the expiry date of your licence: the validity of each licence and category is determined separately.
  • For a simple replacement of a valid licence, no medical examinations are required.
  • If your licence or a category has expired and you want to keep driving, the renewal procedure is followed instead.

Definition

When is a licence considered damaged?

The licence is considered damaged or altered when the details or the photograph on the document can no longer be read properly.

  • Faded or illegible details
  • An altered or unclear photograph
  • A broken or heavily worn document
  • A detached or destroyed surface

If your licence has expired

If the driving licence itself has expired, the renewal procedure is followed instead of issuing a duplicate. The duplicate fees are not paid first.

Loss and theft carry a higher fee, because an additional state charge of €30 applies compared with damage or alteration. Replacing an old document with the card format has its own fee.

The amounts shown are government fees set by the state. They are not the total cost of the procedure and do not include the driving school's fee.

Digital procedure

Digital application and myPhoto

The application is submitted digitally through gov.gr, with identification through Taxisnet. The photograph and the signature are retrieved electronically, provided a photographer has registered them in myPhoto — which is why myPhoto comes before the application.

If you hold a valid old-format motorcycle licence, or a moped licence issued by a Traffic Police service up to 18/01/2013, that licence must be submitted for cancellation and is incorporated into the new licence.

Applicants who are not Greek citizens are asked for additional identification details and proof of normal residence in Greece, as provided for by the procedure.

How the procedure works

    Issuing the correct e-Paravolo

    3695 — €68.80 for loss or theft, 3696 — €38.80 for damage or alteration, code 28 — €30 for replacing an old document in Attica.

    Submitting the digital application

    With the details of your case and the solemn declaration, where this is required.

  5. 05

    Check by the Transport Directorate

    The competent service checks the application and sends the new document for printing.

  6. 06

    Collecting the new document

    We keep you informed about the progress and any outstanding points until collection.

Time, temporary licence and collection

For a duplicate, the estimated time of the official procedure is 45 days. This is an estimate, not a guaranteed deadline.

For replacing an old document with the card format, the estimated time is around one month. This is also an estimate and depends on the competent service.

The official procedure provides for a temporary driving licence to be granted by the competent Transport Directorate. Submitting an enquiry form to the driving school is not a temporary licence and does not by itself give you the right to drive.

The new document is collected by the holder or by a duly authorised person. For damage or alteration, and when replacing an old document, the previous document is handed in on collection.
