A

Many people look for the “unlimited licence”. In practice the official name is category A, and what changes compared with A2 is not an engine size limit but the fact that the A2 power restriction no longer applies.

Riding entitlement

What can I ride with a category A licence?

A is the full motorcycle category. The 35 kW limit of A2 does not apply, so you can also ride more powerful motorcycles, provided they meet the specifications of the category.

In everyday language it is often called the “unlimited licence”. Technically it is more accurate to say that category A does not carry the power restriction of A2. For comparison: A1 covers up to 125cc / 11 kW, A2 up to 35 kW, and A has no category power restriction.

Requirements

Who can obtain category A?

From age 24

Category A is obtained from the age of 24 with direct access, or from the age of 22 if you have held A2 for at least two years.

Do I need A2 first?

For direct access from 24 you do not need to have held A2 beforehand — this is a direct acquisition of category A. The age limit of 22 applies only to holders of A2 who have held it for at least two years.

How much does a category A licence cost?

The cost depends on whether this is a first licence or an extension of an existing one, and on the procedure required in your case.

Government fees are separate from the school's training fee.
